Education as a democratic practice: a tri-sectoral community reflected on participation and citizenship

November 17, 2025

Within the framework of the "Education, Democracy and Gender" cycle, students, academics and professionals met to collectively think about the current challenges of education in Chile.

On October 30, 2025, the second session of the "Education, Democracy and Gender" series of talks was held, organized by the Gender Branch from the UC Faculty of Education. The activity, held in the Mabel Condemarín Room, brought together undergraduate and doctoral students, and academics from the Faculty, consolidating this cycle as a tri-sectoral space to collectively think about the current challenges of education in Chile.

This time, the conversation focused on the concept of democracy, particularly in a year marked by electoral processes and public debates on participation, rights, and democratic coexistence. The panel consisted of Paula Salvo del Canto (Humanas Corporation, INDH Advisor), Valentina Errazuriz (academic at the UC Faculty of Education) and Rodrigo Mayorga (executive director of Fundación Momento Ciudadano and UC academic), moderated by Cecilia Ramirez, academic at the Faculty.

Throughout the meeting, participants reflected on education as a fundamental space for democratic practice, addressing topics such as student participation, civic education, the role of emotions in political life, and the everyday ways of experiencing democracy in educational institutions, as well as the lessons learned from extracurricular and institutional approaches to building democracy and effective participation. The panelists emphasized the need to strengthen pedagogical practices that promote critical thinking, respect for diversity, and the development of more open, inclusive, and deliberative school and university communities.

This series seeks to establish strategic conversations about the links between education, gender and public life, inviting the university community to collectively think about the school and the university as spaces of transformation and democratic commitment.
