The Magic Flute in Schools: UC Opera promotes arts education and interdisciplinary learning

For the fourth consecutive year, the UC Opera presents The Magic Flute in Schoolan initiative that promotes integral formation and the access to arts education for girls and boys in Chile. The project is sponsored by the Music Fund of the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritageconsolidating itself as a prominent cultural and educational experience in the school system.

Open access book and educational resources

Recently, this educational experience was systematized in the book “The Magic Flute in School”, presented in the UC Faculty of EducationThis material will be available on the free access platform of Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritageso that more schools can implement the proposal in their communities.

Bringing opera closer to schoolchildren

Performances were held in various cultural spaces and educational establishments, allowing school communities from different districts to experience opera firsthand. The magic FluteStudents from schools and colleges actively participated, enjoying an adaptation specially designed for them.

An adaptation designed for boys and girls

The school version was created by Juan Edwardspianist, arranger and orchestra conductor, along with the director Miryam Singer, National Prize for Musical Arts 2020. Both adapted the original score to the interpretive and cognitive possibilities of basic education students, facilitating a playful and meaningful approach to Mozart's work.

Project-Based Learning to integrate opera into the curriculum

The project was not solely focused on the artistic presentation. The Magic Flute in School It incorporated a pedagogical phase developed over a semester, based on the methodology of Project Based Learning (ABP)This approach allowed students from 1st to 8th grade to approach opera in a interdisciplinary, integrating content from Language, Science, History, Visual Arts and Music, enriching their artistic and cultural understanding.
