The potential of visual arts in education: Promoting the cultural identity of teachers in training in basic education

The project is part of a specialized course in visual art education for teachers in primary education training in Chile. The research is motivated by the growing cultural diversity in Chilean schools, the potential of the visual arts to respond to the challenges of this context and the gap in teacher training in this area in primary education. Recent studies reported the development of an intercultural pedagogical model that was implemented in the course to be investigated to promote the identity of future teachers and the adoption of culturally inclusive practices. The project explores the effectiveness of the model and its impact on students' perception of arts education and culture through their reflections and creative processes. A/r/tography, an arts-based methodology, guides this project by articulating artistic and qualitative methods, including analysis of national policies, focus groups with students, photographic documentation, and collage creation. The results of this research will contribute to reassess the space offered to the visual arts in initial teacher training.
