Institutional strategies for the development of research capacities in universities in Chile

The general objective of this research is to understand the strategies that universities use to develop research capacities. Although there are no research universities in Chile, in the sense that such a concept is understood globally by reference to the research performance of the most prestigious universities in the world, the idea of a research university exerts an important normative influence on universities with achievements of more modest research, and even on teaching universities.

Five universities in Chile were selected as case studies. These are institutions that have made significant progress in transforming themselves within 5 years into universities that have developed research capabilities. An appropriate balance between private and state universities was also considered, given the likelihood that strategies and policies may diverge to some extent depending on the private or public status of the university. This study seeks to contribute to a better understanding of the strategies used by universities to install research capacities in Chile and Latin America.
