Discussion on national curriculum development policy was held at the UC Faculty of Education

January 19, 2023

The instance consisted of a space for dialogue between different guests, including Viviana Castillo, national coordinator of the Curriculum and Evaluation Unit (UCE) of the Ministry of Education.

Last Tuesday, January 10, at the Gabriela Mistral Auditorium for the UC Faculty of Education, the conversation was held “Voices for a national curriculum development policy”Organized by the Department of Curriculum, Technology and Assessment of Education UC.

In order to present the perspectives of different actors, guests attended as fernanda bravo, director of the Santiago de Chile City School, Daniel johnson, director of the Department of Education of the Universidad de Chile, viviana castillo, national coordinator of the Curriculum and Evaluation Unit (UCE) of the Ministry of Education, and Olga Espinoza, academic from the Department of Curriculum, Assessment and Technology and Coordinator of the Curriculum Committee.

Alvaro Salinas, associate professor in the College of Education, director of the Department of Curriculum, Assessment, and Technology, and director of the Observatory of Digital Educational Practices (OPED) of the Faculty, began the conference and pointed out that "this conversation is part of an initiative of the department, which promotes the work of the different teams autonomously”. At the same time, he appreciated this instance of dialogue and open discussion. “It is interesting especially at a time when the debate has been progressively restricted. Little by little the open, frank, respectful debate, has been lost in our country, and if university classrooms are not the space to recover that, I believe that universities are taking away from a fundamental task, which is to open spaces for discussion and dialogue"He added.

Viviana Castillo, national coordinator of the Curriculum and Evaluation Unit (UCE) of the Ministry of Education, explained that among the objectives of the Ministry, in addition to advancing in the innovation processes that occurred during the pandemic and in overcoming inequalities and gaps that it sharpened, is to work so that “the curricular policy be a state policy and not a government policy. I think that is something that has been said systematically, pBut it has happened very rarely”, explained the national coordinator.

Olga Espinoza, for her part, explained that holding these instances of dialogue regarding educational issues and in particular curricular ones are highly relevant, "both for the work of the Faculty, and to strengthen the work of the academic teams that make up the departments, as well as the link we establish with different actors in the education system, to approach from different perspectives the multiple and complex current educational problems, generating instances of articulation, since we are all called to assume these challenges in a proactive and collaborative way”, concluded the academic.
